When Dr. Turkle lists these 3 gratifying fantasies about our phones…
– that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be
– that we will always be heard
– that we will never have to be alone
…she sums up exactly the mantra of the Facebook generation, that everything they say or do or think is so important that it must be shared by text or update or Instagram. And their parents have raised kids to believe this to be true.

News flash: it’s not. But now what do we do?

Love reading The Nag! Thanks for this

Loved this observation: “We’re well on our way to becoming an incredibly disconnected connected society.”

PS By the way, yes, you are apparently a Luddite . . .

.. Which reminds me of a (true) story– years ago, like in the 1920’s, when telephones first came to Fairbanks — This guy walks into Samson’s Hardware, and while he is talking to the clerk, the telephone rings. The clerk answers the phone, and starts talking. The customer goes to the back of the store, gets some bolt-cutters, cuts the phone line, and says, “I reckon I was talkin’ with you first.”—

There’s nothing like real conversation…
