As Dr. Gordon Guyatt writes (above) about device manufacturers funding medical societies: “If it weren’t influencing the doctors, they wouldn’t be doing it.”

There’s integrity, and then there’s the PERCEPTION of lack of integrity when accepting money from the very organizations that can be seen to be unduly influencing you. Arrogant and stupid if you ask me.

His 2004 studies showed that 90% of heart patients “who rode bikes regularly were free of heart problems one year after they started their exercise regimen” compared to 70% problem-free following angioplasty but no exercise.

But encouraging exercising is financially less appealing for hospitals. After his 2009 follow-up study (again confirming earlier results), Dr. H wrote: “That was my feeling – that hospitals were reluctant to participate in this study, because they derive revenue from revascularization procedures in their cath labs.”

Far more profitable to put in a stent than talk about diet and exercise. Doctors are not blameless but the system encourages them in many ways. As for funding of medical societies… well… there is no such thing as a free lunch.
