Thanks, T.T. Picking a name is not just for a new ‘baby’ – it’s a name to be carried by that baby, teenager, adult and senior citizen! Good luck with choosing a name.

Loved this article – perfect timing too, as my wife and I are discussing baby names right now (due date mid-December). This is a far bigger decision than I could have ever imagined, one affecting the rest of our baby’s life.

Hi Steve – maybe that’s why, in New Zealand, you’re not allowed to give your baby a first name like “General” or “Doctor” or any other titular description? I know a Dr. Blood here, too. And I do have friends here in Victoria who have indeed named their baby girls “Victoria”!

Statistical research shows that people named George are more like to live in Georgia, people named Paul are more likely to name Paula, etc. No kidding. Evidence-based research. And we have a local dentist named Dr. Pain. (the research is also true of profession choice).

— so I guess what you name your baby depends on where you want them to live and what you want them to do. Seems to me if, say, a Canadian living on say, Vancouver Island wanted a daughter to stay around, they would name her Victoria…
