Me too, Lisa. Did you see the New York Times piece recently on the “magical thinking” of docs who take money from industry?

This assurance is worth a lot to me.

I had a doctor who was selling an expensive brand of TED hose (compression stockings) to me. They were very expensive online but he sold them at a far lower price. I had a lot of swelling in my legs and that was bad for me in general, for one thing – a well known truth to physicians everywhere. The swelling was also making worse the injury for which I was at this doctor’s office. I was surprised to be buying them from him but when I came home and saw the traditional retail price, I was glad he was selling them for such a low price.

Even then, a friend of mine was shocked my doctor was selling things, but while he may have been making a profit, I benefitted (and still do!), too, and there was no question I needed the universally accepted item he sold.

I control the price not them. Most retailers see a medical product as a way to knock you over the head with mark-up. The way I run it I make money, they make money and not stick it to the general public like most medical retailer would. Just keep that in mind when you go buy a medical product that looks like any other product you would pay $5.00 for, but pay $25.00 because it has a medical claim on it.

No of course not. They are using the privilege of their medical education to cash in. Very slimy.

You had to remove half your article here because this law firm sent you a threatening letter? This in itself is likely a more intriguing story than whatever it was you may or may not have written about the mysterious Dr. XXXX whoever he is. The important point here is: doctors should NOT be selling retail products. As your College of Physicians wisely describes the practice, it’s “unethical and a conflict of interest”. Period.

Thanks – I’m a new subscriber to both of your websites and I must be in good company if you find yourself threatened by lawyers. Your blog is only one year old and you know you’ve successfully hit some nerves if Dr. XXXX needs to muzzle your observations already. Congratulations.

Physicians should not be trying to sell products. There are few specific exceptions to this truism: if a physician is using a product as part of a clinical procedure (a dermatologist for example who is administering medical treatment). But especially for these “celebrity docs” who are selling online (meaning they have no personal or professional health knowledge of any of the millions of “patients” they are “treating”) – it is clearly wrong, and these doctors know it.
