To shayes: I’m with you 100%. I too cannot stand Costco or other Big Box stores for even one minute – and yet IKEA, for all the reasons you outline, doesn’t affect me the same way at all. It’s actually a pleasant browsing experience, smart, good design, and lots of great style ideas to borrow.

But Ad Man, can’t I have both? I do love my auctions and Saturday markets and neighbourhood shops – AND IKEA!! 🙂

A big box is a big box is a big box. They’re all the same. Just lowering the ceilings and having tasteful room arrangements doesn’t make Ikea into a better place, just a smarter manipulator.

And the marketing strategy specifics make Ikea seem even WORSE than a Costco or a WalMart (who don’t even pretend to be anything other than cheap airplane hangars filled with STUFF).

Makes me wish for a return to shopping in our local little neighbourhood stores, second hand shops, auctions and Saturday markets.
