Here’s how BNet, the business watchdog journal, described Biederman:

“Joseph Biederman pushed Johnson & Johnson to fund a research center at Massachusetts General Hospital that would focus on the use of its Risperdal antipsychotic drug in children, well before the med was approved for pediatric use.

“Seeking to curry favor with the influential doc, J&J put Biederman in charge of the new institute. He also began a study of 40 children between 4 and 6 years old who were given Risperdal and Lilly’s Zyprexa, another antipsychotic drug. At the time, Harvard University and MGH rules forbid researchers from running trials with drugmakers if they receive more than $10,000 from a company that makes the drug.”

That’s likely why Biederman could not tell the truth to his employers that he was on the take from Big Pharma.

Please tell me that Biederman was swiftly fired from his faculty position at Harvard for this. Why should academics expect to operate under a different set of ethical rules about cheating than the rest of the population does?

This makes me sick to read about how pervasive the influence of these powerful pharmaceutical companies has become even among our ivy league schools. I’m embarrassed to be an alumnus…
