You only have to look at the controversy surrounding the publication of the new DSM-5, designed to medicalize much of everyday life – thus widening the target market for pharmaceuticals. There are, however, some psychiatrists who do offer talk therapy, restricting prescription of meds to only the most severe forms of mental illness. Might require some digging to find them, but they ARE out there.

No one should be surprised when their psychiatrist prescribes meds at the first visit; they’ve got nothing else to offer. This way the patient quickly becomes dependant on the “expert” whose house of cards stands for another day. What a sham.

Judy, this post is hardly about whether or not Dr. Carlat is “great” – the pervasive Big Pharma influence of marketing-based medicine as described here is well-known no matter who’s describing it.

He may not be as great as we are led to believe.

If we contemplate this story within the historical scope and the influence of symbolism in perception of the actors of the medical field, we can find very interesting information. Thus, the Rod of Aesculapius is represented as a snake and a staff, where the snake has healing properties. And in this very matter, the snake was thought to represent the ambiguity of the pharmakon (a DUAL meaning of medicine and poison). This actually brings me back to the historical proximity of medicine, Pharmacology and the ambiguity.

So here we are, we did not change that much.
Best Regards,

All patients and doctors should be educated about Dr. Carlat’s experience – my hunch is he is not alone, there are thousands of “Dr. Carlats” out there being paid by drug companies to push their drugs to other doctors.

I had no clue. Dr. Carlat’s story of his one-year “career” as a drug rep should be required reading for all patients. We all need to know how powerful this hired influence is on our own docs. Thx Carolyn…
