Especially troubling is this, from the BMJ report:

“In 2007, an independent analysis of the diabetes drug Avandia found that the drug increased heart attacks and cardiovascular deaths.

“Steven Nissen, MD, the lead author of this analysis, said 35 of the 42 studies he looked at were unpublished and were obtained only because a court case required the drug’s maker, GlaxoSmithKline, to turn over the data.

“Had the medical community known about this hazard, Avandia would likely never have become the world’s largest selling diabetes drug,” said Nissen, chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.”

JAMA then saw a 21% drop in industry-financed research after it began requiring that all data in drug company-sponsored medical trials be independently verified by university researchers….”

And there you have it. It’s all about the money. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and in this case, it is regrettably Big Pharma that pays out of its bottomless pockets.

How can anyone possibly believe that the practice of ghostwitten industry-funded “scientific papers” isn’t utterly pervasive?

Why aren’t government agencies cracking down on this criminal behavior? Why aren’t genuinely independent career researchers screaming bloody murder about their “peers” who participate in this fraud?

Thank goodness there are some docs with conscience who are coming forward to demand things change. Nothing will change until people with influence are as outraged as the rest of us.
