Very revealing story here. All patients and doctors should be educated about Dr. Carlat’s experience – my hunch is he is not alone, there are thousands of “Dr. Carlats” out there being paid by drug companies to push their drugs to other doctors.

Thanks for this candid story of a real life ‘drug rep in a white coat’. Carlat is brave to reveal the truth of Big Pharma’s pervasive marketing influence. I admire this, in a culture where many other docs puff themselves up at being called “thought leaders” by drug companies who pay them to shill for them. Pathetic…

really enjoyed reading this insider’s version of what goes on when doctors are convinced to go over to the dark side. you have to hand it to the drug companies, though, brilliant strategy, get an MD to join your sales team.

Very interesting – and frightening. I really admire this doctor for being so candid and forthcoming about what motivates professionals to get into bed with Big Pharma like this. The tragedy: unlike him, many doctors are still in the bed and apparently see nothing wrong with it.
